Law Society and SRA launch consultation on proposed practising fee cut

The Law Society and The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) are considering a cut to the current practising certificate (PC) fee, and are launching a consultation on the proposal. The 4% cut would bring this year’s fee of £290 down to £278 per solicitor for the 2017-2018 year. Since 2014, the fee has been lowered by 28%, with the decrease made possible by a growing number of solicitors on the roll, along with more efficient operations. The Law Society expects practising fees to account for 73% of its expenditures, with the remainder coming from regulatory fees and commercial activities.
