FBI charges former Skadden lawyer in Russia probe

February 21, 2018 A Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom associate named Alex Van Der Zwaan has been charged with making false statements during the investigation by the FBI into Russian collusion in the US 2016 presidential election.

As reported by Bloomberg, US special counsel Robert Mueller filed the charges against Van Der Zwaan on 16 February. The lie Mueller alleges that Van Der Zwaan told concerns a report he was involved in preparing about the trial of Yulia Tymoshenko, a Ukrainian politician who in 2010 opposed the country’s pro-Russia president Viktor Yanukovych.

The FBI suspects Van Der Zwaan of lying to investigators about conversations he held with Richard Gates, a former Trump advisor who was indicted on fraud-related charges in late 2017.

A Skadden spokesperson commented that Alex Van Der Zwaan’s employment at the firm was terminated in 2017 and that the firm has been in full cooperation with the authorities in regards to the matter.
