Najib Razak preparing for forfeiture investigation with US firms

June 7, 2018 Former prime minister of Malaysia Najib Razak is reported to be setting up relationships with a high-profile team of US lawyers as the scandal surrounding the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) heat up.

Forfeiture complaints were filed against 1MDB in 2016 and 2017, alleging that over $4.5 billion was laundered from the company through a number of shell companies and bank accounts. Najib allegedly benefitted from the misappropriation of funds from 1MDB, to the tune of $681m.

According to a pair of Malaysia newspapers, Najib is being advised by Boies Schiller & Flexner chairman David Boies, as well as Boies Schiller partner Matthew Schwartz, a former prosecutor. Najib is also reportedly listed as a client by Ashcroft Law Firm.
