Shearman faces heavy government involvement in Chinese Hummer deal

July 31, 2009 The proposed acquisition of the Hummer brand from GM by Chinese company Sichuan Tengzhong is still unapproved.

Shearman & Sterling, which is acting as international legal counsel to Sichuan Tengzhong, confirmed reports that no formal application regarding the Hummer deal has been made yet. Shearman & Sterling's China managing partner Lee Edwards told the legal journal "China Law & Practice" that the company had “discussions regarding the proposed transaction” with both Mofcom and the NDRC.
