Class action suit stops Facebook's Beacons

A class action lawsuit has led to Facebook agreeing to shutdown the controversial Facebook Beacon service. Through the Facebook Beacon service, Facebook is notified when users take certain actions on participating sites. The proposed settlement calls not only for Facebook to discontinue Beacon, but also back the creation of an independent foundation devoted to promoting online privacy, safety and security. The money for the foundation will come from a US$9.5 million settlement fund, reports Computerworld.
