DLA Piper set to expand in Brazil

DLA Piper is set to expand its operations in Brazil, after announcing the commencement of a cooperation agreement with local firm Campos Mello Advogados. The local firm has been boosting its numbers with a number of hires in Sao Paulo, including project finance partner Roberto Barros from Linklaters, three corporate partners from Machado Associados - René Gelman, Martim Machado and Adriano Chaves - and tax litigator Fernando Salvia, from an independent firm. Two senior partners from DLA Piper have been licensed as foreign consultants by the Sao Paulo bar association: the Chicago-based chair of the firm’s Latin America practice, Stuart Berkson, and the New York-based global co-chair of the energy practice, Robert Gruendel. The firm is in the process of applying to become a foreign consultancy, which will enable it to act on international aspects of deals in Brazil.
