British PM agitates for UK access to Indian legal market

British Prime Minister David Cameron visits India this week to explore a range of trade deals, including opening up the Indian legal sector. The proposal has met with stiff resistance from the Indian legal fraternity. Lalit Bhasin – president of the Society of Indian Law Firms – said: “It is not just a question of opening up legal services but a matter of opening our system of administration of justice. The legal profession in India is an integral part of our justice delivery system. Tampering with the same may lead to serious consequences.” Meanwhile, some other lawyers are more optimistic about the prospect of opening the sector to foreign firms, which would generate employment opportunities and will cater to the huge demands of India’s growing economy.
