UK legal industry shake-up will cause 3000 firms to go under

The countdown is on, with the Legal Services Act set to make significant changes to the UK legal services industry in one year’s time. Many smaller firms will be dubious about their continued viability in a marketplace that allows alternative business structures outside of the partnership model and, according to Justice Secretary Ken Clarke, their worry is fully justified. Clarke says some 3000 small firms face closure, and that the changes are "far, far bigger than most people are expecting". Some firms seem to be trying to avoid this worst case scenario by signing up to high-street legal franchise QualitySolicitors, and rumour has it that another 50 are set to join in the new year.
