Aussie firm Gilbert + Tobin is the frontrunner in merger talks with Clifford Chance

Clifford Chance has held talks with a number of Australian firms in both Sydney and perth as it intensifies its search for a suitable merger partner. Reports have emerged that the leading candidate is Sydney firm Gilbert + Tobin after talks with Perth firm Cochrane Lishman Carson Luscombe stalled. The Australian legal services market has been targeted by a number of large firms this year, with Allen & Overy launching its Australian branch after poaching teams of lawyers from rival local firms, and Norton Rose establishing a presence after concluding a tie-up with Deacons.
