SJ Berwin moves to merit-based pay

SJ Berwin has announced that it is abandoning the associate lockstep model in favor of a merit-based compensation system. Under the new scheme, associates will move between three pay bands on the basis of their performance. This model replaces the lockstep system that saw associates move through seven pay bands based on their Post-Qualification Experience. Managing partner Rob Day said: “This is the way the market’s moving and we want to move with it. The previous system was inflexible and with smaller bands you end up with angst over smaller differentials.”
