UK partner promotions up by 38% this year

The number of partner promotions in the UK’s 50 largest firms rose by 38 per cent this year, according to a report in Legal Week. The 2011 promotions round saw 495 lawyers made up to partner, up from 358 the previous year. Legal Week explains the growth by pointing to growing market confidence and a series of trans-Atlantic mergers. Only 25 per cent of promotions elevated women to the partnership in 2011, and just 15 firms within the top 50 had women account for at least 30 per cent of the promotions round. This group of 15 included Norton Rose, Squire Sanders & Dempsey Hammonds, Olswang and Irwin Mitchell. And top marks to Trowers & Hamlins and Bird & Bird, which had all-female promotions rounds in 2011.
