New players in the litigation funding game

There is growth in the “alternative litigation funding” market this year, and while some firms remain wary of litigation funding arrangements, others welcome their participation in litigation because they assure that fees will be paid without incident. A number of new players have entered the game in the past few months: Bentham Capital LLC opened for business a little over a week ago under the leadership of Ralph Sutton, a former lawyer at Cowan, DeBaets, Abrahams, & Sheppard. The company will focus on commercial and intellectual-property litigation. Another new player is John P. “Sean” Coffey, a former plaintiff lawyer at Bernstein Litowitz Berger & Grossmann, who has launched a new litigation funding company called BlackRobe Capital Partners LLC.
