McDermott Will & Emery to launch South Korea office

McDermott Will & Emery is planning to launch in Seoul, following the ratification of a trade agreement that allows foreign law firms to open offices in South Korea. McDermott will be one of the first Western law firms to launch in the country, and Korean practice head In-Young Lee will lead the firm to focus on transactions, intellectual property and international trade matters originating within the country. The firm’s co-chairman, Jeffrey Stone, said that the firm is on “the leading edge of what promises to be a wave of new activity in South Korea.” Other firms with plans to open offices in South Korea later this year include Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton; Paul Hastings; Sheppard Mullin; and Simpson Thacher & Bartlett.
