Indian firm Amarchand plans to double headcount to 1000 lawyers in 5 years

India’s largest law firm Amarchand & Mangaldas & Suresh A. Shroff & Co is pursuing a rapid expansion strategy, with plans to double in size over the next five years to reach a headcount of around 1000 lawyers. The growth agenda is part of a comprehensive strategic plan developed over a period of 12 months in consultation with partners, associates and market and financial analysts. The process of putting together the plan was conducted by The Boston Consulting Group. Another part of the plan is a reduction of the founding family’s ownership stake in the firm, continuing a process that started in 1995 when the family had 100 per cent holding, and aiming for somewhere between 40 per cent and 50 per cent by 2017. This report on Livemint provides a fascinating insight into the workings of the firm and its future direction, including the views of both insiders and experts on the firm’s management structure, profit sharing arrangements, record of partner retention and recruitment strategy.
