Covington & Burling to launch in South Korea

Covington & Burling announced this week that it plans to launch a new base in Seoul, South Korea. Other international firms that have announced their intention to open offices in South Korea – possible since the conclusion of the U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement – include McDermott Will & Emery, Paul Hastings, Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton, Ropes & Gray, Squire Sanders & Dempsey and Clifford Chance. The plan to open in Seoul is “part of a broader effort to build a platform for the firm in Asia,” said Timothy Hester, chair of the firm’s management committee. The firm already has an office in Beijing and plans to open another in Shanghai this summer. The Seoul office will be led by corporate lawyer William H.Y. Park, who will work alongside Washington-based senior of counsel Daniel Spiegel.
