Trend of international mergers to continue

December 17, 2012 A recent trend of international law firm mergers is set to continue, says UK legal consultant Tony Williams, who predicts that mergers will likely boost the number of law firms with $2 billion or more in revenues from five to 10.

In a tough legal service market, many law firms are seeing the upside to gaining access to new markets and offering clients advice across multiple jurisdictions, and gaining ground via a merger can be a cheap way of reaching those objectives.

Recent merger announcements include the upcoming combination of K&L Gates with Australian firm Middletons, creating a firm of more than 2,000 lawyers under the name K&L Gates; Norton Rose’s merger with Houston firm Fulbright & Jaworski under the name Norton Rose Fulbright; and SNR Denton’s upcoming three-firm combination with Salans and Fraser Milner Casgrain, with the combined firm operating under the name Dentons.
