The expansion of the category of 'other' lawyers

June 15, 2014 The legal job market may be tough at the moment, but leading US law firms are seeing the growth in the ranks of at least one category of lawyers: ‘other’ attorneys. The designation as ‘other’ means that they are neither partners nor associates - the group is made up of staff attorney and of counsel (it doesn’t include contract attorneys).

The category of ‘other’ attorney jobs grew by 8.8 per cent among the largest 350 US law firms in 2013 - more than any other category - according to the National Law Journal. The expansion of this category in 2013 follows a nearly 1 per cent decline in the same category in 2012.

Some observers say that the growth in ‘other’ attorney is driven in part by client demand for cheaper services.
