Baker & McKenzie launch SA employment practice
Baker & McKenzie has hired Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr's director of employment, Johan Botes, to launch an employment practice for the firm in South Africa. Botes will join the firm in its Johannesburg office as a partner and is accompanied by associate Lauren Salt.
Botes' practice has included a myriad of employment law and labor relations matters, such as industrial relations and advising companies on organisational restructuring.
Baker & McKenzie has hired partners from Cliffe Dekker a few times already in the past year. Last March, the firm hired projects and energy partner Kieran Whyte and the previous December brought on banking partner Jennifer Stolp.
In addition to its steady hiring over the past 18 months, the firm acquired local competition boutique Vani Chetty Competition Law in August of 2014. Bakers launched its South Africa office in 2012 with a team from defunct firm Dewey & LeBoeuf. The Johannesburg office now has more than 100 lawyers and staff.
