Rio Tinto hires Freshfields corporate partner as new general counsel

Rio Tinto has hired former Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer partner Philip Richards as group general counsel in London. Richards was a senior corporate partner at Freshfields, and was originally seconded from Freshfields to lead Rio Tinto’s legal department in December. Former Rio Tinto GC Debra Valentine stepped down from the position in November, following an investigation regarding mining payments made in 2011. Before joining Rio Tinto, Richards had served as a partner at Freshfields since 1987, having worked for the firm in London and Milan.
