Linklaters’ Shanghai spinoff plans nearing completion

Linklaters is progressing with its plans to establish a spinoff of its Shanghai base so that the firm will be able to practice local law. The spinoff will be structured in accordance with new Shanghai Free-Trade Zone (FTZ) rules, allowing the firm to practice in the country. As part of the transition, three Linklaters partners and 16 lawyers will leave the firm’s China offices, potentially joining Zhao Sheng, a local firm that currently operates under a ‘best-friend’ agreement with Linklaters. Linklaters China chief operating officer Chris Holt said the firm aims to provide its clients with a dedicated law capability in the country.
