Clifford Chance hires senior FTC lawyer William Blumenthal

January 6, 2009 Clifford Chance has hired William Blumenthal, a former senior lawyer at the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), to head its US Antitrust group.

As general counsel of the FTC, William Blumenthal was responsible for US competition law. He represented the US government in ongoing discussions with China over the country’s new Anti-Monopoly Law. He was also involved during government contacts with India, Japan, and Korea on their respective competition laws, and joined in major matters affecting competition and consumer protection relationships with the European Commission.

Simon Baxter, Global Head of the firm's Antitrust group, said, "Bill's recruitment signals clearly our determination to build a US antitrust practice of the same quality and scale as our global antitrust offering. The distinction of having the former General Counsels of both the FTC and EU Commission as members of our firm (Michel Petite joined us from the EU Commission in January 2008) will mean we can offer clients unique and valuable insights into the policies and practices of both agencies at the highest level."

Before entering government service, Blumenthal practiced law as a partner in the Washington, DC office of King & Spalding LLP.
