US law firm mergers boom in 2009

In the first quarter of 2009, law firm merger activity has gained pace in the US. About 20 mergers nationwide are expected to close. Southern law firms recently moved into the focus of attention. Last year's merger activity includes Fort Lauderdale-based Katzman & Korr and Maitland-based Garfinkel Trial Group (now Katzman Garfinkel & Rosenbaum), California 400-lawyer firm Sedgwick and Fort Lauderdale law firm of Gordon, Hargrove and James as well as Kansas City-based Blackwell Sanders and St. Louis-based Husch & Eppenberger. Coral Gables-based Adorno & Yoss' headcount increased to 300 lawyers through mergers, acquisitions and recruiting. In 2009, St. Louis-based firm Bryan Cave and Atlanta-based Powell Goldstein have merged and so have Birmingham, Alabama-based Bradley Arant Rose & White and Nashville-based Boult Cummings Conners & Berry.
