Companies push law firms to drop 'billable hour'

In the recession, some major companies are fighting back against law firms' practice of billing them by the hour. A survey found an increase of more than 50% this year in corporate spending on alternatives to the traditional hourly-fee model. San Francisco-based Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP has tripled the revenue generated from alternative billing arrangements in the past year.
