Turkey fines Google $47m for tax dodging
Istanbul's tax department has fined Google 71m Turkish lira over the Internet giant's non-payment of profit taxes, Turkish media report.
Google says it is not liable for the taxes as it manages its Turkish operations from its European headquarters in Ireland.
Google does, however, have a company in Turkey itself, Google Reklamcilik ve Pazarlama (Google Advertising and Marketing), which is why the Turkish tax authorities believe Google is liable for tax.
Asked to comment by Internet publication The Register, an unnamed Google spokesman said: "Google complies with tax law in every country in which it operates. We are currently in discussion with the Turkish authorities about this, and are confident we comply with Turkish law."
