Seyfarth Unveils More Details About Merit-Based Plan

Seyfarth Shaw unveiled more details about its planned move to a merit-based associate compensation scheme, according to a report in The National Law Journal, a sibling publication. The pay scheme--which will be phased in over the course of 2010--will place associates in three distinct tiers, or "bands," says managing partner Stephen Poor. The tiers are roughly equivalent to the traditional junior, midlevel, and senior associate positions at large law firms. Instead of promoting associates based on seniority, lawyers will be evaluated and promoted on the basis of their mastery of core competencies in each band (there are eleven core competencies in all). The competencies include "delivering legal excellence," "driving client value" and "building a practice," Poor says.
