Carbon Footprint Report Card for UK Law Firms.

March 9, 2010 A new report compiled by the Legal Sector Alliance shows an overall reduction in carbon emissions of 4% among member firms since the first public report in December 2008. The annual average carbon emitted per employee fell only slightly (0.14%), against a backdrop of significant headcount reductions amongst the participating firms in 2009.

Flights accounted for a significant portion of the footprint: 31% of the carbon footprint at Herbert Smith, nearly 23% at DLA Piper, 22% at Linklaters, 19% at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer; 15% at Allen & Overy and 13% at Slaughter and May.

Usage of gas and electricity is the biggest factor in the size of the footprint, and varies widely between firms: from 899 kilowatts per square metre at Bates Wells Braithwaite to 97.57 per square metre at Cripps Harries Hall.
