Discrimination claim against Clifford Chance reopened after $350K settlement
Clifford Chance offered an ex-associate $350,000 to settle a discrimination claim. The plaintiff, Caroline Memnon, had accused the firm of racially discriminating against her, firing her, and then making it difficult for her to secure employment with another firm. A claim was also made against another firm, Sullivan & Worcester, who hired Memnon in 2007 but fired her less than two months later. Memnon settled with Clifford Chance late last year, nearly six years after the firm asked her to resign, for the $350,000 sum. According to new reports, however, Memnon has moved to reopen the case, claiming that the lawyer acting on her behalf from Doman Davis had coerced her into accepting the settlement against her will. The size of the settlement was revealed when a partial transcript of the November 2009 settlement talks was mistakenly posted on the federal court system's online docket. It has since been removed.
