US Bar Course introduces aptitude test for entry

Starting in 2011, candidates for the US Bar Professional Training Course will have to sit an aptitude test in order to gain admission to the course. The aptitude test is being introduced in response to the findings of a report prepared by the Bar Standards Board, which concluded that the number of graduates from the course far exceeds the number of pupilages available (in 2006, 1,932 students enrolled in the course, and there were only 471 pupillages available to the entire group upon graduation). In addition, it was found that many people undertaking the training course were so ‘lacking in the qualities needed for successful practice at the Bar, including fluency in spoken and written English, that they would never obtain pupillage, however many pupillages were available’.
