Which kinds of work require the services of a lawyer?

The UK legal profession has grown by 50 per cent each decade over the past 50 years. There are now nearly 150,000 solicitors in England and Wales, and if current trends conitnue that figure will reach the million-solicitor mark in 50 years. This article addresses the question of whether the areas of work reserved for qualified solicitors should be expanded beyond the current categories of preparing litigation, representing someone in court, transferring land, certain limited aspects of probate, notarial activities, and the administration of oaths. The article goes on to look at the question of why consumers might turn to lawyers when they have access to cheaper services from non-lawyers.
