Billable hour in decline, says US survey

October 12, 2010 A new survey confirms that the billable hour is losing ground to alternative billing arrangements, with firms increasingly offering fixed, capped or discounted fees to clients.

The Law Department Metrics Benchmarking Survey 2010, which investigates fees paid to external counsel by in-house legal departments in the United States, found that 72.8 per cent of the fees paid in 2009 were not based on the billable hour – up from 66.1 per cent last year.
