Former Clifford Chance associate sues for discrimination
A former associate from the New York office of Clifford Chance is suing the firm, claiming she was discriminated against when she was laid off in 2007. Karen Ramdhanie is claiming compensation under New York City's Human Rights Law for discrimination on the basis of race, gender, national origin and age. Her claim arises from the contention that the firm protected the jobs of white male lawyers, and chose to lay off only black and female lawyers when the economy took a nosedive. Ramdhanie is also making a claim on behalf of her sons, whom she alleges suffered mental anguish, humiliation and emotional distress as a result of her dismissal.
