American Bar Association agitates for access to legal market in India

November 12, 2010 American Bar Association president Stephen N Zack is lobbying the US government to make access to India’s legal services market for US lawyers a priority on his visit to the country.

Zack argues that Indian lawyers are able to do US legal work, with an increasing trend toward outsourcing by US firms, but that American lawyers are excluded from the large and lucrative legal market in India.

He also claims that the development of the trading relationship between the two countries would be enhanced by allowing access to (American) lawyers well versed in the laws of the US, those of India and cross border transactional matters.

According to reports, the issue has been dropped from Obama’s agenda, and India’s legal market is not expected to open for at least five years.
