Committee to consider operation of foreign law firms in India
The Bar Council of India has put together a committee to examine the issue of whether foreign law firm should be permitted to operate in India. The committee will consult with state bar councils, the Law Ministry and foreign law firms. The news of this development was heard by the High Court of Madras in relation to a pending petition challenging the working of foreign law firms in the country in violation of the Advocates Act. In light of the circumstances, the Additional Solicitor General and the Advocate General sought an adjournment of the matter for three months. The Court allowed the adjournment upon the undertaking that the Advocate General would seek no further adjournments.
