Qatar gives qualified access to foreign firms

January 5, 2011 Qatar has opened its legal services market to foreign law firms for the first time. International law firms with 15 years of continuous experience in their countries of origin (and employing lawyers with 15 years professional experience) may be granted a licence if they can convince local authorities that their expertise will be of use in Qatar.

The Justice Minister is empowered to reduce or waive the experience requirement, and high profile Qatari lawyer Dr Hassan Al Sayed said he hoped that there would be such a waiver in relation to Qatari lawyers working with international law offices.
