Japan Disaster revives debate on Nuclear liability and safeguards

Are Indian nuclear power plants at risk? In the light of recent nuclear tragedy in Japan, India needs to re-examine the ability of its nuclear power plants to withstand disasters and its policies to handle their repercussions. As India is moving to a new nuclear regime involving the private sector, there is reluctance by the nuclear establishments to share information with the public on plant safety provisions. The Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) has always kept it very secretive. Now is the time to wake up and demand transparency. Looking at the fact that Japan is a technologically sophisticated country, which had built its nuclear power plants to withstand exigencies and calamities, is still finding it difficult to contain the disaster. The question that arises here - Is India prepared to deal with high-risk nuclear technologies?
