US general counsel pay on the rise

A survey on the compensation of general counsel by legal publication Corporate Counsel has shown that pay for chief legal officers has made some recovery after a couple of tough years - total cash payments increased 18 per cent in 2010. Bonuses are increasingly tied to corporate performance goals, and the figures awarded are increasing. Meanshile restricted shares remain the most popular way to reward high performers with equity. The highest compensation in the survey went to Denise Keane, the top legal officer since 2007 at tobacco giant Altria Group, Inc. Keane took home $6.5 million in total cash compensation.
