More mergers with Aussie firms on the cards

Rumours abound that two major Australian firms are set to merge with international players. Mallesons Stephen Jaques has reportedly been negotiating with leading Chinese law firm King & Wood; while Blake Dawson is apparently in talks with UK firm Ashurst. The Mallesons and King & Wood alliance was foreshadowed in an email from the Australian firm’s chief executive partner Robert Milliner, who wrote: "We have spoken to King & Wood as one of a number of Asian firms”, adding "However, we continue to review the best option for the long term future success of our firm." Investment in the Australian legal market seems to be a priority for a number of firms, Allen & Overy, Clifford Chance, DLA Piper and Norton Rose all announcing local tie-ups in the past two years.
