New York's top law firms increase lawyer headcount by 1.6%

November 2, 2011 Employment in New York law firms has grown by 1.6 per cent from 2010 figures, according to Crain’s latest ranking of the city’s top 25 law fimrs. Seventeen of the top 25 law firms saw employment increases over 2010.

Top of the lawyer headcount list is Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom, with 754 lawyers, while Weil Gotshal & Manges sits at number 3 on the list, after adding 72 new hires last year for a total of 627 lawyers in New York.

Shearman & Sterling saw an increase to 401 lawyers from 337 last year. A representative of the firm said that it has deferred new associates in the past few years, but expects a return to more consistent hiring patterns.

Some firms decreased their headcount over the past year, such as Cadwalader Wickersham & Taft, which lost ten per cent of its lawyers, dropping 328 to 296. A spokesman said the company is anticipating growth next year.
