Law Society of Botswana bars 39 firms from practice
The Law Society of Botswana has barred 39 law firms from practising because they do not have current practicing certificates. Among the prominent firms in the list are Dow and Associates, Isaac Seloko Attorneys and Busang Sebonego and Company. Affected law firms insist that they have paid their subscription fees, and that the responsibility loes with the Law Society, which has delayed new practicing certificates. Busang Sebonego of Busang Sebonego and Company said that he paid his fees last Friday, but the High Court failed to give him his certificate upon payment. He expected to receive his certificate by today, and was shocked to see his firm’s name on the list. He and other law firm leaders are concerned that inclusion on the list will adversely affect their reputation in the eyes of clients. This is not the first time the Law Society of Botswana has called a halt to the business activities of unregistered firms, having done the same thing with 30 firms in April 2011.
