NY State Bar says UK firms with non-lawyer owners can't work in NY

After recent changes to legislation in the UK under the Legal Services Act, law firms can change their business structure to receive external investment and legal services can be offered by companies that aren’t law firms. No UK law firm has yet adopted an ‘alternative business structure’, but many have been making moves in that direction. A new ethics opinon from the New York State Bar might make them think twice - ruling that New York lawyers can’t practice law in the state if they are part of UK law firm with non-lawyer owners.
