Rumour says A&O considering pay rise for associates and trainees

Rumour has it that Allen & Overy is considering a substantial pay rise for lawyers. The firm is apparently in the midst of discussions on the pay issue, which should conclude in a couple of weeks. In the meantime speculation abounds about the magnitude of an imminent pay rise, with one partner suggesting first seat trainees could see their pay rise from £38,000 to £40,000, rising to £45,000 by the time they reach their final seats, while others say that a smaller pay rise is in order. In any case, a pay rise will be good news, since trainee’s salaries at the firm have been frozen for six years and salary bands were frozen across the board last year. Further, as pointed out by RollOnFriday, a pay rise at Allen & Overy might precipitate a similar pay rise at other major firms, potentially affecting thousands of lawyers.
