Indian firm Kochhar & Co is the first Indian law firm to launch an office in Japan

Indian law firm Kochhar & Co has launched a one-lawyer office in Tokyo after a two-year process to secure regulatory approval from the Japanese authorities. Managing partner Rohit Kochhar explained that the firm’s Tokyo office, located in the Akasaka commercial district, would consolidate the firm’s position as a pioneer in Japan and the first Indian law firm to open an office in that country. “We feel that even our existing clients and the clients we retain in future will draw a much higher degree of comfort by virtue of the fact that we have an office (in Japan),” Kochhar said, “as well as a Japanese (office) manager and an Indian qualified lawyer stationed here that they can reach out to not only in their own time zone, but also in their own city and within an environment that is closer to their own culture.” Kochhar & Co may be the first Indian firm with a physical presence in Japan, but other indian firms are certainly involved in Japanese markets, working with Japanese companies on investments in India.
