Litigation funding firm BlackRobe hires Simpson Thacher lawyer as MD

April 18, 2012 New York-based private investment firm BlackRobe Capital Partners has hired former Simpson Thacher & Bartlett lawyer Michael Chepiga to become its managing director.

Chepiga has been with Simpson Thacher for 30 years, where he has been the head of the securities litigation practice and a had place on the executive committee.

In his new role, Chepiga will make decisions about which cases will be chosen for investment of litigation finance, and will participate in the fundraising process.

He says that the litigation finance field is growing, and predicts that it will grow beyond its traditional domain - funding plaintiffs lawyers against wealthy corporate opponents - to be used by corporate clients themselves. "Clients are experimenting in all sorts of things, and at the end of the day they want the best representation at the best prices," he says. "The billing relationship between clients and firms is changing dramatically, and over the next couple of years [BlackRobe] hopes to become part of that process."
