Mumbai HC hearing on working of foreign law firms in India

The final hearing on a petition questioning the operation of foreign law firms in India will begin in the Bombay High Court on Monday. The petition was filed by Lawyers` Collective, a public interest trust which provides legal aid, in 1995 following Reserve Bank of India`s permission to two US-based and one UK-based firm to set up consultancies in India. Lawyers Collective`s contention was that as per the Advocate`s Act, 1961, only those who have enrolled as advocates can "practise profession of law".
