Are law school rankings reliable?

Numerous publications in India produce League tables of colleges, ranking educational institutions in the major disciplines, including law. These rankings generate a lot of discussion and debate, but there are a few things that indicate that they shouldn’t be taken too seriously. First, it seems that there is little consistency in the the rankings of Indian law schools from year to year. With this much movement among the top 25 schools, one might ask whether the quality of these institutions is changing from year to year, or whether there is in fact some kind of flaw in the ranking process. The methodology varies between different magazines, but generally includes subjective ‘perception scores’, along with employment statistics (usually supplied by the college) and a score based on pitch documents submitted to the publication. All in all, it doesn’t strike one as being a particularly scientific method.
