Australian firms make redundancies

January 2, 2013 A number of Australian law firms are making layoffs among lawyers and support staff.

Clayton Utz made around 20 people redundant in Sydney and Melbourne, including between 10 and 15 lawyers along with a number of support staff. Allens has laid off employees too, though the firm would not confirm the numbers. Meanwhile, DLA Piper is set to lay off fee earners and support staff, with reports suggesting that the number of redundancies will be less than 10.

Ashurst Australia would not confirm reports of layoffs, though a spokesperson commented: "This is a very challenging market and [the firm] has made some adjustments in response to prevailing economic conditions."
