Birmingham firm Blakemores shuts down

March 12, 2013 Birmingham law firm Blakemores has closed after more than 50 years of operation, putting up to 200 jobs at risk. Industry observers attribute the firm’s failure to legal aid cuts and the shrinking personal injury market.

The firm invested £5 million in an innovative project to establish one of the UK’s first ‘direct consumer marketing brands’, Lawyers2You, with a call centre in Birmingham more than 20 outlets at shopping centres, airports, sporting events and festivals.

The firm’s strategy failed, say some observers, because it could not come up with enough cash to see the plan through to fruition.

The Solicitors Regulation Authority has intervened and closed the firm, taking possession of all documents and funds.
