McDermott Will & Emery awards 2012 bonuses

March 17, 2013 McDermott Will & Emery is traditionally one of the very last major law firms to announce associate bonuses, and the firm has just gotten around to the matter of bonuses for 2012.

The firm awards bonuses on an individual basis, taking merit into account, so it is difficult to get a sense of their size. But Above the Law reports that their readers have been in touch and are generally happy with the bonus award. Sources say that while some individuals will be awarded a bonus that is below the market standard, others will be at or above that standard. Some described the bonuses as ‘generous’.

A spokesperson for the firm said: “McDermott’s bonus system is a merit-based system in which we evaluate and make bonus awards on an individual basis. In addition, our focus is not on the bonus, as such, but on an Associate’s total compensation, which for top performers can exceed the total compensation of Associates at the highest-paid lock-step firms. It’s a highly individualized system that rewards excellence and performance.”
