Simmons lawyers told to increase billings

May 1, 2013 The managing partner of Simmons & Simmons has chastised associates for not billing enough, sending a firm-wide email to point out that competitors are recording an extra 500 hours of billings per associate per annum.

Jeremy Hoyland wrote that "when I compare us to our peers, the utilisation of our lawyers is consistently below that of other firms. This does not just relate to US firms (which tend to run off a higher utilisation, lower rate model) but to a wide range of firms, some of which consistently report utilisation figures 500 hours+ above ours".

The firm has left its billable targets for associates at 1,700 hours per year, but has taken the step of introducing a minimum level of 1,400 hours.
