Large Irish firms added to headcount in 2012

May 21, 2013 Four of Ireland’s largest five law firms grew their lawyer headcount last year, according to data published by the Law Society.

Law firms Arthur Cox and Matheson ended 2012 with the exact same headcount - at 228 solicitors - making them the largest firms by headcount in the country. Matheson increased its solicitor numbers by 9.6 per cent over the year, while Arthur Cox grew by 10.6 per cent.

The third largest firm, A&L Goodbody saw the biggest expansion, growing by almost 16 per cent from 183 to 212.

The managing partner of Arthur Cox, Brian O’Gorman, explained that the growth could be explained by the firm’s annual intake of 25-35 newly-qualified solicitors, combined with the fact that fewer than usual solicitors left the firm last year. The firm also recruited specialists in “two or three areas” where there was demand, like investment funds and asset management.

The managing partner of A&L Goodbody, Julian Yarr, pointed out that a significant part of its growth was located in the international market, which represents more than 60 per cent of the firm’s overall revenue.
